Documentary “Rionegrinas” tells the memories of indigenous women and inspires future generations.
Ohpenkõ di´a kahnã numia is how indigenous women of the Rio Negro or rionegrinas are written in Tukano, one of the languages spoken in this region of the Amazon.
And on this March 8, 2025, Women's Day, the documentary “Rionegrinas” arrives on social media and can now be accessed on the YouTube channel of the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA).
Released in 2023, the documentary toured film festivals in 2024, winning an award at Ecocine, and is now available on social media.
The film tells the story of the mobilization of women in the indigenous movement of the Alto Rio Negro (Amazonas). “Rionegrinas” also marks the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Department of Indigenous Women of the Rio Negro (DMIRN/FOIRN).
“They gave me a very small room. There was barely enough room for me, a table and a chair. What am I going to do with just this table and chair?” recalls Cecília Albuquerque, from the Piratapuia people, the first coordinator of DMIRN.
Today, DMIRN has a coordinator and five regional coordinators who facilitate dialogue with the indigenous territory of the Rio Negro.
